The Insulin Breakthrough- The Production of Insulin
In January of 1922 Frederick Banting and Charles Best tested their solution on their first human patient. The young boy who was 14 years old showed immediate improvement and this confirmed that diabetes finally had a life-saving treatment. This allowed for mass production of insulin, resulting in millions of lives saved and countless lives enhanced. Insulin is credited as a “miracle drug” and one of the most influential drugs ever invented. As of 2010, an estimated 285 million people globally had diabetes, with 90% of the cases being Type 2. The incidence is expected to double by 2030. Without insulin, the number of deaths would be staggering.
