Later Years- The Death of Frederick Banting
Banting went to work with the Canadian Army Medical Corps again when World War II began. He wanted to serve on the frontlines, however was moved to the research front as it was believed he would be more valuable there. On a secret mission, while flying to England, he went down in a plane crash over Newfoundland. In a last act of service, he managed to wrap and treat the injuries of the pilot before surrendering to his own injuries. His profound life as a scientist who saved millions of lives ended in February 1941, at the age of 49. Now, diabetes has advances so far as to have insulin pumps, which are attached to the body and are able to electronically able to determine and inject precise doses of insulin into diabetic patients.
